Garage door headroom and side room

Headroom is the clear space between the top of the opening and the ceiling or lowest obstruction. Side room is the clear space beside each reveal. Door mechanisms use these areas for frames, guides, tracks, springs or a roll. The amount needed depends on the exact product and fitting position, so generic figures can lead to a poor fit decision.

Sectional doors

Garador’s published sectional specifications give a useful example of how the configuration changes the requirement. For its specified tension-spring Z-track doors, Garador lists minimum headroom of 100 mm for manual operation and 115 mm with a GaraMatic operator, with 90 mm of side room on each side. It also lists garage-depth requirements that vary with door height and operation. These figures apply to the described Garador range and fitting instructions; they should not be carried over to another model.

Hörmann’s fitting guide distinguishes a sectional door fitted fully behind the opening from one fitted partly behind it. The depicted headroom and side-room ranges differ between those positions. The door and frame can also project into the opening differently.

Roller and up-and-over doors

Roller doors need room for their curtain roll and guides, but the exact box and guide dimensions are model-specific. Garador’s current GaraRoll specification page describes clear passage relative to ordering size; it does not provide a headroom or side-room figure in the page text. Ask for the exact product drawing before deciding that your clearance is sufficient.

Up-and-over doors have their own frame and movement requirements. Canopy and retractable gear are different configurations. Check the chosen maker’s fitting sheet rather than relying on an older generic table.

Measure left and right clearances independently and note pipes, shelves and lights. The measuring guide explains the measurements; the size checker only reports verified model-specific data. An installer survey is needed before ordering.
