Garage door and gate costs: comparing quotes

Understand what changes a garage door or gate quote and use a consistent checklist to compare installers without relying on headline prices.

There is no single useful price for a door or gate without knowing the opening, product, access and work included. Compare written quotes for the same scope, then ask about anything missing. Gravelmead does not publish a market price estimate: use the prices in your own current quotes.

What can change a quote?

For a garage door, the measured opening, made-to-measure requirements, material, finish, insulation options, operating gear, opener and removal of the old door can affect the proposal. Installation access and making good may also matter. For a gate, include the gate and finish, posts, groundworks, hinges or track, automation, safety measures, electrical work and site conditions.

Compare scope, not just totals

Check that each quote identifies the manufacturer and model, measured order size, operating arrangement and finish. Confirm who removes the old equipment, disposes of it and repairs any disturbed surfaces. For automation, ask what safety assessment and protective devices are included, who commissions the complete system and what documentation and instructions you will receive. HSE guidance describes the installer’s responsibilities for powered gates and the documents that accompany a completed machine.

Ask for the warranty terms, exclusions, expected maintenance and what happens if the equipment needs an adjustment after installation. Make sure the quote states whether electrical work, posts, foundations, remotes and manual release equipment are included. Do not assume an item is included because it appears in a product brochure.

A fair comparison

Put the same assumptions beside each quote: opening dimensions, chosen configuration, removal, making good, automation, safety measures, groundworks, electrical work, handover documents and warranty. Mark each as included, excluded or unclear, then ask the installer to clarify gaps in writing. Lowest total alone does not show whether the scope or safety arrangements match.

Use the door and gate quote comparer to compare your own offers. It does not store your quotes or recommend an installer.
